I'm a fellow with many passions (perhaps too many). In fact, I'm pretty good at avoiding things that don't create passion and enthusiasm for me. Selling to government became one of those passions...accidentally.
When I was a young fellow, about 12, and visited the radio station across the street from my Mom and Dad's paint store, I knew immediately that working in a radio station was what I would do with my life. And, for 20 years, broadcasting was my work.
Along the way, I ended up working for a turn-around consultancy and was to focus on broadcast clients. Yet, I ended up with a client who wanted to sell to the government and win government contracts. It had never occurred to me that I would enjoy that type of work (much less be good at it). But, enjoy it I did and was pretty dang good at it. I developed a passion for it, learned a lot, made a good bit of money doing it, and now help others do it.
Another passion is education and cultivating others. I'm from a long line of Educators, married to one, father to one and serve on the School Board where I live in Tennessee.
When I can combine passions, I'm particularly happy, as I've done in my government selling career. Nothing I like better than to advise and guide people to success in bringing good value to government.
That's one of the reasons I write this blog and do the podcast Myths of Selling to Government, which is chock full of guidance...all free! Now, I'm expanding the services to Government Selling Coaching Sessions for individuals and organizations.
Most of my government selling work of the last few years has included coaching as part of a more comprehensive engagement. Now, I'm offering it as a stand-alone service. You get to pick the topics and set the session frequency. If this sounds like something that might interest you, let's talk. Email me at rick@govselling.com and we'll set something up.
Oh, my 12-year-old self was right. I'm still involved in broadcasting through a client who sells radio and TV air time to government and nonprofits and am a voice actor who does radio and TV commercials regularly, mostly for government and nonprofits. (www.voiceovergrandude.com)
You can't always do work that stokes your passions, but you can sure try.
